Another long ride. Wednesday 23rd September 2015.
I pick up another "Nominate" ride. John Hare, Cliff Jones and Michael Triesman join me for a jaunt to Knowl Hill. Well that's the original plan anyway.
Heading South in the morning sunshine through Ritchings Park and Colnbrook, we wave to Mr Peck, supping his tea in the cafe at Datchet. He waves back, but not frantically enough to make us slow down or stop. Curving around the Southern perimeter of Windsor Castle and it's grounds, we arrive at the Top Twenty Cafe for elevenses. A steaming hot mug of coffee for 80 pence is not to be sneezed or laughed at, even if it is instant. John H goes solo at this point, while the rest of us pedal Westward.
At a junction in Dedworth, I suddenly find myself alone. A sudden panic sets in as I wonder if they took the wrong turning, or got fed up. Losing one person is bad enough, but the whole crew? Eventually Cliff and Michael arrive. It was the loss of Michael's rear light, and the subsequent search that held them up. So it's onward through Paley Street and White Waltham, with Cliff counting off the pubs en route that were once frequented by the Loiterers but have since closed. Is he dropping hints I wonder as I head for Flix's truck stop on the A4 at Knowl Hill. Stopping at the route 4 junction, I offer a nearby pub (The Cricketers Arms) as an alternative to my preferred greasy spoon cafe.
The lady behind the bar noticing our bright clothing assumes that we are cyclists. "No" I say, "We just like bright clothing." After a hearty meal made heartier by Michael donating his salad, we are off again. It's now quite cloudy and a bit nippy as well. A stiff following breeze assists our return journey. Past Lillibrooke Manor and Bray, we stop at Dorney Court for tea. We then take a bit of route 61 through Slough and Langley Park to Iver. separating at Cowley for our various homeward routes.
Regards Bernie G.
