Out before 5:31 sunrise for another early Sunday ride over Alpe d'Pine (Pine Hill). (The number 531 has a lot of resonance for vintage bike enthusiasts; it denotes a steel alloy used in better quality bikes back in the day.) On the hardest part of the climb up Erial Road, a young guy wearing a headcloth riding a mountain bike with a bag hanging off a rack came up from behind and easily passed this wheezing old guy. Just afterward, I saw the guy working the fuel-pump booth in the gas station at the top of the second hill. He passed me on his way to work (before 6am). I gave him a wave as I went by. Well done, young man. After the Alpe climb I tacked on a loop that allowed me to monitor the bluebird boxes we put up in Cooper River Park. The boxes are currently occupied by the tree swallows (pics) that thrive near the water, but after their one annual hatch, we are hopeful that bluebirds will find the boxes and take up residence. Again I found someone had left one of the box doors hanging open, which endangers the chicks therein. Close the door after you take a peek inside, Bozo.
