This was an organized ride that was held June 12. The ride begins from Ranier Park. The first 5 miles are brutal with nearly 1200 feet climbing. The next 10 miles are more mellow, although Fern Hill Road is 5.4 miles of more uphill than downhill. At mile 13, make a sharp left turn onto Apiary Rd. There were numerous log trucks on this road. Finally enjoy a nice, long descent. Another long, stead climb begins around mile 16 and continues for 3.5 miles to the turn-off to Camp Wilkerson. The final 5.5 miles on Apiary Road are mostly downhill. Unfortunately, a pretty strong headwind made the downhill a little less enjoyable.
The routes split at highway 47. The full century veers left to Vernonia. The metric goes right toward Mist. This was another 7 mile stretch of headwind or crosswind. Mist is at mile 33. Recommend taking a break in Mist because there is another daunting hill-climb on the way to Clatskanie. A 4.5 mile climb to Clatskanie Summit. When reaching the summit sign, there is a short downhill, followed by another short climb to a 1300-foot sign. This begins the 5 mile downhill into Clatskanie. Ride through town for 0.7 miles and then veer right off of highway 30 to NE 5th. Go right for 0.3 miles for a rest stop at the park. Make a U-turn and ride onto Swedetown Rd. This is a relatively flat section for 3 miles, then there is another long climb. After climbing a couple miles the course makes a left onto Cedar Grove Rd. This is a monster climb. Another mile of 10% or greater grade. There are a few long rollers after reaching the top then a long 2 mile descent beginning at Lost Creek Rd. Lost Creek Rd dump out at highway 30. Ride east on highway 30 for 1.3 miles. There was a nice tailwind on this section. Turn right at Old Ranier Rd and continue another 3 miles to the Larson Rd. junction. Stay straight and climb another 0.5 miles past the high school to Meserve Rd. Go right and continue 2.4 miles into the city limits. Use caution on the steep downhill. There are two stop signs.
