I had a bit of trouble sleeping last night. The temperature didn't want to come down, and the threat of rain meant I had to keep my rain fly up. So it was a bit hot but eventually I slept ok. It did rain a little during the night but it all soaked into the soil by morning.
I was lazy about leaving this morning because after the past few days I was getting fatigued. I eventually got going pretty late morning and started climbing. Up and down, much more up the first part of the ride. After a few miles on good gravel I turned off to natural surface which in this case was rocks everywhere, of all sizes. The climbs weren't too steep but a lot of the rock was loose.
I crested the high point for the day finally around noon, and suddenly finally had service. I barely had anything in McDermitt and I was really far from another town. I took the opportunity to call my parents, and Jen. I was in the dumps a bit, just tired mostly, physically and mentally. As I spoke it began to drizzle and I had to put my rain coat on for the descent. I was in better spirits after my conversations, and I pushed on. The descents were pretty gradual today, which was nice, especially the rocky ones.
As it turned out, it was a very cool day today. Cloudy and off and on rain at times. Not much more than a drizzle. I only ran into sticky mud a few times and it didn't cause too much trouble. I found a nice creek in the middle of the day and stopped to get some water and scrape my bike and shoes free of mud.
After the last major climb, I was looking forward to a really nice long gradual downhill. But I was spit out onto awful washboard gravel and a headwind. Normally there is at least a bike tire width of smooth road somewhere but the whole thing was bad. By the end of it I felt exhausted and defeated. I had pavement to Fields but a strong headwind still. And I missed the store closing time. But they were still there, and I inquired about camping as they have RV spots, and they graciously allowed me to tent camp in the grass next to the store(and cafe), for free. So after a very hard day I am glad to be in such a nice place, I will be able to get plenty of water and resupply in the morning when they open up at 9, so I don't have to worry about rushing off. I could use a bit of extra rest.
