I slept great but and had to be sure to keep my quilt around me when turning over. I finally got up just before the sun began peeking through the saplings, and checked the temperature. 34! No wonder I was a bit chilly. A good test of my quilt. As long as I had all my parts inside I was toasty.
I still had service so I frantically triple checked to make sure my bypass route to Oak Ridge and Cottage Grove was still open. There were new lightning caused fires from a storm last night, and several closures but they were on the other side of Oak Ridge from my route. I decided it was probably open and finally left around 9, by which time it had warmed up over 25 degrees.
I quickly turned off the gravel and began a climb on a smooth but really washed out jeep road. The grade changed constantly from flat to super steep and back till I crossed a divide and then it seemed like I was passing a natural pond or lake every quarter mile. The biggest one was Summit lake. Crystal clear water and it looked full surprisingly. Shoreline was surrounded by trees, all public land around, no cottages here. I stopped at a couple other small ones, equally as breathtaking. I have never much cared for lakes myself, but these were put here by nature, which made me appreciate them much more than the artificial ones i am used to seeing.
The road turned to gravel for the descent, then after a few miles turned to pavement. Where i had a flat to gradual descent through more stunning forest, huge, 150-200 ft trees on either side of the road. I picked up the Middle Fork of the Willamette river for the trip down towards Oak Ridge. I stopped at around 2000 feet at a tiny campground by the river that had an open spot, and filtered some water and cooked some oatmeal for lunch, and dropped of my trash. It was tempting to just stay there shaded by huge trees with the roaring river there beside. But I continued on, aiming for the other side of the pass to Cottage Grove.
Eventually I rode to a huge reservoir that was about half empty. The road was curvy and mostly flat. I wasn't all that impressed, the undammed river was prettier and it didn't have nearly the charm of the natural lakes I had just seen.
I decided to save a few miles and bypass Oak Ridge and just start up the climb.i had plenty of food and water. As I was stopped at the turn rearranging things, a group of three mountain bikers passed me and asked me where I was headed. We got to chatting, and began climbing, as I told them all about my trip. It was great having company for a few miles of that long climb. They were really nice. We wished each other well when we got to their trail, and I continued on to do the rest of the climb. As it was midday, I was all set to do the climb with the hot sun beating down. But thr trees all along the road were so tall that they blocked most of thr sun even in the middle of the day. Many were well over 150 feet. It almost hurt my neck, craning to look at their crowns. It was dense, thick forest with many different aged trees mixed in, and thick green moss on everything.
After a long while I finally crested the second top and descended down the other side. The entire climb and descent were paved, one lane like a gravel national forest road, but with pavement, it was weird. I didn't see anyone on the way up or down until I got to Brice creek. And then it was only a handful of dispersed campers beside the road. I was beginning to think they had taken all the spots but I finally ran across a little flat spot beside the road that a vehicle won't fit in easily.
There is no traffic to speak of, and the dominant sound is the rushing creek across the road.
