I slept good to the sounds of rushing Brice creek, but woke before sunrise because nature beckoned, and decided to just get going because I knew it would be hot down in the valley in town in the middle of the day. It was comparatively warm, middle fifties, which suited me perfectly. I enjoyed a beautiful gradual descent through some patches of old growth, and what seemed like second growth. Just guessing though. It was amazing, and honestly reminded me a lot of North Carolina.
Abruptly I emerged into private property and cabins all along the creek, reminiscent of NC in that respect once again. I passed a house with some incredible carvings of various animals, real and imagined. I did indeed see Sasquatch this trip after all!
It was pretty early so I saw many house cats out on their morning patrols, and actually a lot of turkeys that didn't seem too concerned about my presence.
I refueled at the Safeway in Cottage Grove and went on my way, beside I-5 for a bit till i climbed off away from town. I had planned this route hastily by using cycling heat maps, and this took me to a gated private road owned by Weyerhauser. The sign was clear that I wasn't allowed. I debated and decided to just ride the parallel London road. I took a little break here first, and a truck pulled up and the guy was on the phone for a few minutes before he pulled up to the gate. He was installing a new fire danger sign on the gate to help ensure nobody enters. The fire level changed here today to extreme. He was really nice after I explained what I was up to and that I didn't intend on hopping the gate. He wished me good luck on my trip and I pedaled off on London road. It didn't have much traffic at all and had a big shoulder.
Soon i was in the country proper and dispensed with a little climb up to 1800 feet, and thought that was it for the climbing on the day but actually had another 500 foot climb not long after that. By this time it was getting a bit hot but I wasn't affected too much. As I got closer to civilization again I was motivated by the promised AC and grocery store in Roseburg. I was worried about the roads on the run into the hotel along the frontage road but other than an obscene amount of window glass in the large shoulder, it was pretty safe. There must be a hell of a lot of accidents here. Only thing that explains the endless trail of glass shards.
I arrived at my exurban shopping wasteland where my hotel was at the perfect wrong time, Saturday middle of the day. So I had to perform a bit of urban car dodging and curb hopping to get to the Albertsons and back up to the Motel 6(the official motel of my trip, "We'll leave the light on for ya... -Tom Bodett"). I was grateful that I at least had a throwaway bike lane. It prevented me from being buzzed but I had to be vigilant about right hooks onto the on ramps for the interstate. But I got to the hotel safely with, as usual, entirely too much food. I should get to the coast in a couple of days and am looking forward to some great camping along the coast.
