I actually got going earlier than yesterday and finished the climb I had started, and enjoyed the descent in the warmish morning air. The 101 had a big shoulder and was deserted anyway. Soon though, the highway left the coast and I continued on a series of relatively light traffic roads near the coast and along three large bays.
I stopped briefly to marvel at the view in Pacific City, and got water at a parking lot for the Sitka Sedge natural area. Pit toilets were super clean too.
I got a few snacks and a drink at Netarts, and followed some hills to Oceanside, and on starting the next climb met a sign that said the road was closed at the state park. I was worried but pressed on. I got to the top and there were concrete barriers blocking the road but there was an opening that people obviously used. Only sign just said no parking. I continued and it was closed due to road damage, it was too torn up for a car but was fine for bikes. It didn't last long before I spit out to an open car road and I rode by a bay at low tide for awhile till almost Tillamook. I liked the town, but it was busy. I got a couple things at the Safeway, then left town after an eternity of waiting in traffic for the lights to change, and then had to dodge traffic and some short narrow bridges. I would be following the 101 again for awhile and I was in pretty good spirits. I was thwarted when I tried to get some fast food, as I was actually in the mood for it. But the inside was closed in all of them.
I rode through some beach communities, which was fine, shoulder was sufficient. I finally got super hungry and stopped at Barview, at a little store that made me a cheese pizza, and I ended up getting a whole medium pizza even though I really only wanted a couple slices. But it hit the spot. It was a good thing I fueled here, because after Manzanita, the shoulder disappeared and traffic increased and sped up a lot and the climbing started. I seriously had several very close calls here that really got me upset. I was really freaking out but all I could do was finish the climb. I sprinted the downhill to let out my frustrations, which didn't really help. There was another climb but this time I had at least a passable shoulder. It was still frightening but nothing like the climb from Manzanita.
I'm really surprised at my reaction, I wasn't really angry anymore, just numb to the way I was treated and almost killed, over and over and over. I rode down the second climb and stopped at a Church and just sat there and stared at the ground for a few minutes. I had no faith in humanity anymore. I wasn't even angry, just really disappointed. I felt like a ghost. Like I had already died.
I rolled away and finally made it to a side street in Cannon Beach. I was looking forward to this place the whole trip. Been looking forward to visiting ever since I saw the Goonies. But I was not in the mood. There were well dressed, clean, rich people everywhere and I suddenly felt like I didn't belong at all. The town was upscale in every way, and I stuck out like a stinky thumb. I never stopped at a park or store, I did look at the beach and took a picture. But I left right away, overwhelmed. I had already planned beforehand to ride up the climb to Ecola State Park and just stealth somewhere, and I found a really fantastic spot, which boosted my spirits a lot. Maybe after a good night's rest and some forest bathing in solitude I can recharge enough to feel up to go visit the beach in the morning before moving on.
