Stopped a lot for photos and even to take a call. The Initial climb to the Marlette lake was hard for me not being used to the altitude.
The Flume trail was as always one of the greatest trails in the world, the return on the Tahoe Rim Trail was technical towards the top and not easy but the views were great.
I started the trip at The Spooner Lake parking area ($10/ car per day) and climbed for 4 miles on North Canyon Rd, the last half mile is steeper and loose sand made climbing with my 1.5" almost slick tires difficult but doable. Went down for about a mile to the beautiful Marlette Lake. At the lake took the right following its shore towards the Flume trail. Near the end of this section, just before the sign announcing the start of the Flume trail the trail disappears for 20 yards under 3" of water, just look ahead and you'll see the sign.
The Flume trail itself is just 4.5 miles and is as good and pretty as it gets. Loose sand and narrow path with a huge drop (at least 1000 feet I would think) on the left that provides incredible views of Lake Tahoe, make this ride unforgetable. Plenty of stops to take photos. I was glad I had a bike bell to announce myself on the numerous blind corners.
At the end of the Flume Trail I went up a steep half a mile on Tunnel Creek to the Twin Lakes sign. After a short rest and map consultation made a right onto the Tahoe Rim Trail. This section climbs ~1000 ft on 2 miles and it is very technical at times. I managed to do an "involuntary" slow motion dismount when I could not negotiate a steep section between big and small rocks. Just a scratch on my shin but a remainder I was riding alone in low traffic trails, need to pay more attention...
After a false summit there was more climbing but the top was near
The trail goes up and down on short rollers for a little while until it reached a Vista point with a spectacular view of the Marlette Lake and down bellow the huge Lake Tahoe (worth folloing the 30 yards to the Vista point).
More single track descending till the Marlette campground where there is water and a chemical toilet. The Tahoe Rim Trails continues to the left of the chemical toilet, to the right is the Hobart Road. I took the Hobart Road and got to an intersection with a sign that clearly states Marlette and Spooner lake to the LEFT but being tired I misread it and went to the right.
That fire road goes towards the lake but unless you want to visit the Marlette House and further down a remote lake shore with no other trails goin to it, do not take the Right as I did! The view at the remote shore was lovely and there is some sort of electric plant but going back to the point where I took the wrong turn involved pushing the bike up a very steep fie road with a bed of small rocks that make getting traction almost impossible. Walking was more efficient.
Once I was back on track it was just another 2 miles to the Marlatte Lake where I retraced my steeps back to the Spooner Lake parking lot.
Great ride. Make sure you take a camera and if hot plenty of water and some extra food and clothes in case you get lost.
