I've gotta say that RPI is an absolutely fabulous experience. A very well-organized event that truly showcases the majestic scenery of central Idaho. The whole town felt very welcoming, and even the campers & hunters driving up the gravel roads in large pickup trucks with trailers were quite courteous. There were plenty of friendly volunteers who worked right up to the end, and the closing festivities were quite enthusiastic. Highly recommended!
As for the ride itself, it was challenging and rewarding in equal parts. The morning started off chilly with a 7-mile long climb, but then moved into beautiful valleys between large mountains. Heat and headwinds increased throughout the day, but that initial hill became a thrilling final descent. This year's route included several about 6 miles of single track (miles 60-66) that was fairly rocky and technical. I signed up for the 102-mile route but missed the time cut for the 21-mile loop in the middle, and was extremely happy with the 81-mile result.
