I had a great night's sleep and woke refreshed. I made some oatmeal and took my time breaking camp. It's so nice to camp at a proper site. I finally left at 9 and the temperature warmed up really fast and I had to shed clothing before I even left town. I rode most of the way out of town and didn't see a grocery store so I looped back only to give up looking and just get a couple things at the Circle K. They had Bottlecaps!
As I pedaled away from civilization again onto gravel, completely exposed, I realized the wind still had yet to change. If it kept up I was looking at a long, hard day.
The wind was pretty light but the gravel was pretty loose. I was a bit frustrated with my progress by noon. Thankfully it was warm at least. I ran into a little dark cloud that rained on me for a few miles with the sun shining intermittently. I never saw a lightning strike but I heard one thunderclap. Eventually I worked my way past it but the wind just kept gradually increasing, from the east.
Finally I arrived at Fort Macleod where I was looking forward to a grocery store for a snack and a soda. And a park. The grocery store in town proper was fine, I grabbed a few things and then went to the park nearby to fill up bottles and rest a minute. The bathrooms were locked and I couldn't find a faucet anywhere. It appeared to be the only park in town looking at the map. Other than baseball fields and those are a waste of time to check out. And what was worse I actually needed to use the restroom. I took off for the larger grocery store on the edge of town. They didn't have a public bathroom and I had to buy water here, which is stupid but I needed to move on. If you're ever in the area, skip Fort Macleod. There's also supposed to be a historic fort but there certainly weren't signs directing one there. Big thumbs down. I switched to some of my favorite music when I turned into the wind on the first gravel road and pedaled away my frustrations.
Soon though I came across an abandoned house that was all by itself, and had no no trespassing signs. It looked like a pioneer house and had probably been abandoned for decades. But it still stood. It would have been a good camp but I needed to get more miles in today. So I took the opportunity to use the seclusion to take care of my natural business. I felt pretty good afterwards and re-signed myself to push on to Lethbridge.
I made it to the tiny town of Monarch which had an enormous church, and another smaller one on the other side of the road. Neither were suitable for camping unfortunately. I was pretty pooped and wanted to stop for the day. I went through town and at the next intersection I saw a sign for a church. I decided to check it out. But I still hadn't gone by it when I got to the next intersection so I turned around. When I got back to the highway I decided to go down the other way, as it led to a cell tower a good half quarter mile away with nothing nearby. There happened to be an unkempt cemetery right in front, and I decided to camp just behind the cell tower fence just hidden from the dirt road and highway. It will do for tonight.
