It's my ride. As I wait patiently in Windsor St, it's beginning to look as though I will be leading a second consecutive ride on my own. Fortunately Sandra takes pity on Bernie no mates, and follows me out of Uxbridge. Following a well cycled route past Fulmer and Littleworth Common, we descend Harvest Hill to Bourne End, and elevenses at Flowerland. "See you outside" says Sandra after refreshments, as I wander off in search of the gents. In my attempt to leave the garden centre, I end up doing about three circuits of the place before I pick up the green exit signs. By the bikes, I see Sandra looking nervously around and casting anxious glances at her watch.
In spite of my obvious lack of navigational skills, Sandra continues to follow my route as we head over Cookham Rise to Marlow. Following my GPS and it's thin blue line, "Watch out for the thick blue line, it's the Thames" "Oh yes, so it is" I reply. We head for the Giggling Squid for lunch. Excellent cuisine, and as it's a lunch time "special", reasonably priced.
After lunch we head along the Marlow Rd to Cores End. It's getting a bit wet and chilly now, but not bad enough to warrant waterproofs. We have a couple of hundred feet to climb, but Sandra's route up Hawks Hill road, followed by Harvest Hill, is easier on the legs than the climb from Flowerland. On the way back we pass two ornamental dragons on a rooftop named Fred and Wilma. The Flintstone references could allude to the dragon's passing resemblance to Dino the pet dinosaur. If all this sounds a bit childish or far-fetched, think of it as a reference point, or a navigational aid.
Onward to Littleworth Common and the rain is heavier, so it's on with the waterproofs, then a stop at chez Gladwin for tea. A slightly damp Alan and an extremely damp D4 arrive from excursions in Black Park. After a couple of very welcome mugs of tea, it's time for me to head homeward. The rain doesn't let up. I don't really get wet, but I need anti-mist specs with wipers. The next time I'm in Specsavers I will have to inquire.
Did I enjoy the ride? You bet. Most of it was in the dry with even a brief bit of sunshine, and I haven't seen Marlow for ages.
Regards
Bernie the Bolt
