My 9|11 10th Anniversary Busse Woods-SCGT Half Century Ride. I started my ride at 7:46 a.m. to coincide with the onset of the terror attacks ten years earlier. After experiencing two flat tires (both caused by a tear in my rear tire) and an hour of walking, I returned home at 2:30 p.m. The skies were mostly sunny with an occasional cumulus cloud passing by. Temperatures started in the mid-60s and quickly rose through the low- to mid-70s with light and variable winds.
Home . . . to Cloverdale to Lawrence to Keeney. Crossed Lake and continued on Bryn Mawr to Hill (at 8:03) to Central to [Roselle Starbucks at 8:06] to Main to Prospect to Granville to Ambleside to Devon to Plum Grove to Oriole to Blue Jay to Longboat to Schooner to [path] to Biesterfield.
On Biesterfield, I realized I had a flat rear tire, so I rode to the Shawnway Shopping Center on the SW corner of Biesterfield and Meacham. With a new tube installed, I continued on Biesterfield to White, where I soon began to realize that my rear tire was losing air again. I continued to Rohlwing (trail) to [Busse Woods Trail].
As my rear tire lost its remaining air, it became increasingly difficult to ride, so I began walking my bike where the trail intersects with Beisner Rd. I walked my bike to Village Cycle Sport, which opened at 11:00. My total walking mileage was 3.3, which I included in the ride stats. [Hence my lower than normal Average Speed.] I followed lightly travelled streets (Beisner to Winston to Cosman) to the [Busse Woods spur and trail] to Arlington Heights (sidewalk) to Village Cycle Sport. I arrived at 10:15. Thanks to Stuart's willingness to open the store early for another rider and me, I was able to purchase a new tire, a new tube, and replacement air canisters. I was on my way at 10:40, crossed Arlington Heights Road to Busse Woods spur, and continued CCW on loop. Completed 3/4 loop to spur path, then continued on Salt Creek Greenway Trail, following Cosman to Arlington Heights to Brantwood to Carlisle to Clearmont to [walking bridge] to Clearmont to Ridge to Mittel to Bauman to [path] to Prospect (sidewalk) to [path] to Brookwood (25 miles at 11:55) to Forest Preserve to [Addison Road path] to Salt Creek Trail to [Cricket Creek Path] to 2nd to Villa to Thomas to Wildwood to Villa. I stopped at the 7-Eleven for cold water and banana, then continued on Wildwood to Great Western Trail to Pleasant Hill (41.2 miles at 1:36) to Burdette to Kuhn to Lies (path) to Woodlake to Woodhill to Kuhn to Madsen. Rode through company parking lots and exited at the head of Covington. Continued on Covington to Camden to [Dominicks plaza] to Thorn to Lawrence to Cloverdale . . . to Home.
