This ride had it all. Early start with Sonny, Doug and John to try and avoid the heat. That didn't really work since half an hour in and it began to get warm already. We kept the pace nice and relaxed. I've never felt so good climbing. The God rays filtering through the campfire smoke wafting between the huge Redwoods was beautiful. Then the Doug Train blew by after we left Big Basin. Non-stop express to the lunch stop. I was lucky to get on. E. Zayante was exposed and hot. I felt pretty good until the very top when I ran out of water. I was suffering from dehydration along 35 and I was lucky to make it to Hwy 9. On the descent of Hwy 9 there was a guy riding in front of me and as we went around the left hander before Pierce Rd., his rear tire blew out and I saw him go down. I tried my best to both stop and avoid him but because of the turn he slide right into me. Swept out my tire and I ended up catapulting over my handlebars. I landed on my right shoulder but managed to somersault. My bike and I somehow managed to escape with very minor injuries. That guy - not so much. Pretty bad road rash on his left butt cheek. He wasn't wearing gloves so the heel of his palms was pretty bad and he got a cut on his forehead. But overall he was actually pretty fortunate to get away with just that. The rest of the ride I felt good. Except for the dehydration and crash, I would have had a GREAT ride!!! :)
