I went to BelMont Bikes to have them check out why my rear derailleur was so out of alignment and grab some lunch.
The micro adjustment, the electronic equivalent of barrel adjustment was set to 25. The range is 1 to 29, from most inboard to most outboard. I figured I should set it back to the middle and have the derailleur reset.
When I went back after lunch the shifting was actually worse, it was hesitating on the downshift for two of the cogs. Also the micro adjustment was at 1 so even less room for changes than before.
Bent the hanger some more and got it shifting pretty well but it's still at 1.
So ordering a new hanger. No idea how it got bent. I don't remember hitting it or dropping the bike at any point. The shifting was already a little weird before going up to Yosemite so it seems unlikely that it happened while on the roof rack on the drive up. But that would be the only other explanation.
Something I've never experienced before. Getting ready to take off on my ride, I put my hands on the levers and they're bumpy. What's that? Oh right! Dead bugs from the trip back from Yosemite on the roof rack. :)
