Got up at 5, left at 545 from Fort Chiswell Super 8 motel and went across the parking lot to Denny’s for a hot breakfast - mistake. We got out of there at 730, after a decent breakfast but everything was wrong, the order, the bill, the service. Thankfully the food was pretty decent. Had a rolling up and down ride with Gore-Tex on because of the threatening rains, but it was also hot so if it wasn’t raining we were baking in our plastic suits. We took it on and off a couple times and then decided we would rather be wet and cool so we left it off. Stopped in Wytheville for a water bottle fill at a rude chiropractor’s office, mailing home Maui’s harness that we don’t need, and doing an Amazon order for Maui’s food to be delivered to a hotel in Berea, Kentucky so we’ll have it when we need it in a couple of weeks but don’t have to carry it over Virginia hills. Somewhere along the afternoon way we met up with Amy and Woody again, Amy was fixing another flat (poor thing, she’s had so many) and we all made plans to go to the Troutdale church hostel together. Lots of rolling hills and one long but easy hill later, and after Gore-Texing up for one HUGE downpour, we rolled up the steep gravel driveway to the hostel and found clean bunks to roll out our sleeping pads, a clothes dryer in the room, and a HOT SHOWER! We had planned our non-cooked dinner of a rolled tortilla with peanut butter and crunchy dried bananas, but Amy and Woody were wanting to share pasta, zucchini, and sauce (they had bought a lot and it was heavy, but they’re also super generous!) - and afterwards, Woody lent some strawberry jam and our rolled tortilla creation became dessert for everyone. We chatted a bit with an Appalachian Trail hiker bunking up next door and then hit the hay, planning on a 5 a.m. wake-up to help get an early start on a longer day with one really big climb upcoming.
