Ollie wanted to ride down in Santa Cruz and he brought some of the Mochi Gang along.
I offered two routes and this is basically merging the two together. First time descending E. Zayante. It feels narrower descending it than climbing and it feels bumpier. Otherwise it was nice.
There seemed to be a lot more cars on the road than usual. And as usual, on the quieter sections, we wouldn't see a car for a while but as soon as there was an interesting photo to take, a car would show up to ruin it. And it wasn't just happening to me. I need to come up with a good name for this.
Originally we were going to try and have lunch in Santa Cruz because Carissa mentioned wanting to go to Penny Ice Creamery. I didn't realize there was a location in Aptos near Cat and Cloud. So we went to Gayle's Bakery for lunch and then to Penny for Ice Cream and then Cat and Cloud for coffee. Pretty good food stops.
It was the first time for everyone at Gayle's and they were overwhelmed by the choices. It was weirdly empty when we first got there so they called our numbers fairly quickly but also right after getting there it suddenly got crowded.
Penny Ice Creamery was pretty good with a nice area outside of artificial turf that we could sit in the sun and enjoy our ice cream.
We set a decent pace up all the climbs today but climbing Eureka Canyon, Eric was pushing (after Keisuke took off at the bottom after we had just stopped to wait for him because he was off the back - resting up for the PR attempt I guess) and Ollie and I followed. We started to wane near the top but I finished off strong. Speaking of the top, I'm so happy the moonscape close to the top has been repaved and smooth now. They just need to pave the rest of it.
We had talked about stopping at Summit Store but decided to skip and go get pizza after the ride. We found Nonno's Italian in Redwood Estates. It was a nice spot with a chicken roaming around under out outdoor table. I thought the pizza was okay, others thought it was really good. The crust was... I don't know how to describe it, it wasn't savory enough? Greasy enough? It was too light. Under-proofed? Something about it was off.
Today's ride was an 8 slice (calorie-wise) ride. I had 3 or 4 at Nonno's and add lunch and ice cream and I think I broke even (even if it felt like it was a calorie positive ride with all the food stops).
My legs were starting to feel it towards the end of the ride. I haven't ridden with this much intensity in a while and it felt good.
