I’m not just upset, ‘Murica, I’m also disappointed.
Thursday night before going to bed, I went back and re-watched the original Marcel the Shell with Shoes On shorts. So delightful! Friday morning I woke up to more bad news coming from the Supreme Court. Serious emotional whiplash from that and I didn't really recover until part way into today's ride.
At the start of the ride, I wasn't feeling great and thought maybe I'd have to call it but towards the top of Kings, I was feeling better and by the time I got to Lobitos Creek, I was feeling pretty good.
It was warm to start but it was at Lobitos that I saw the wall of fog sitting on the coast. Luckily it wasn't too bad at Dad's. I brought layers and they were just enough to ward off the cold.
Descending Higgins Canyon, I came around a lefthand corner to find some idiot cyclist perpendicular in my lane facing to the right. I slammed on my brakes and briefly locked the rear. I yelled SO loud at this guy. I kind of wanted to go back and tell him what an idiot he was being but I was able to luckily get around him and continue descending so I just kept going.
At Dad's I was sitting at the table with an older couple at the other end. All of a sudden I recognized a familiar voice. It was Cary Phillips and those were his parents. I didn't realize he lived on the Peninsula too. It was fun running into him.
Amazingly, even though I got to Dad's around noon, they still had Homemade Chips! Woo!
I was pushing harder on the climbs than I have been in a while, partially because I was by myself but also to work off the rage. On Tunitas, the Garmin popped up the segment and I felt obligated to go for it, especially when it was telling me that I was ahead of the PR of the person ahead of me (so even faster than mine). But then part way up the steeps, it said I was off the segment and immediately shut down the PR/segment page. I figured I'd been pushing all that time, so now was not the time to slow down and I kept going.
At the top, my legs were cooked. It's been a while since my legs have felt so done before the ride was even over. Still, I figured, maybe I could make this ride a century and head south for a loop and get some milk tea in RWC rather than head home.
On the way down Kings, something didn't feel right. I guess I underestimated the heat because the tire pressures had gone up. They felt pretty good in the morning but were way too high in the afternoon. I actually stopped many times to release air out before they felt semi-decent again.
I was also starting to get a headache from the heat. I tried to stay well hydrated but I was so looking forward to the milk tea. The milk tea was delicious but afterwards I got hit with some bad headwind.
Originally I was going to do a flat gravel century up to Off The Grid in Alameda but decided to pass on that because I didn't want to deal with the head/crosswinds. I ended up getting some of them anyway.
It was clear that I wasn't going to make it to 100mi. but with the wind and my tired legs, I wasn't in the mood to try and just headed home.
