Missing the data from the last 21 miles, including 376' of elevation gain and 5131' of elevation loss (i.e., 9 Mile Canyon!). Total elevation gain for the ride is just over 13,000'.
This is a better ride than I expected from the standpoint of scenery. Quite a few more miles but only a little more total climbing compared to 9 Mile Canyon to Sherman Pass and back, but this makes the more challenging climb up the west side of Sherman Pass.
Rode with Pete, Judy, Jeff, and a special guest appearance by Brook Henderson, a beast of a rider and a nice guy, too. This guy can ride circles around me...
I'm out of shape, so the best thing for me to do was to lead as much as possible. It's the only way I can keep the others down to my speed! LOL
I told them all to go for it on Sherman Pass because Ken had offered to drive down as far as the Kern should we need SAG help. I even stopped for almost 10 minutes to cool down and eat and drink some fluids.
When I reached Sherman Pass, I had just missed the group photo and the last big group of Ken's riders started down. My small group stayed, and I was there almost 30 minutes before I became antsy and wanted to get going again, so I started just before them, figuring they would catch me on one of the small climbs on the way back.
I caught Margaret and David Slaton just before the descent to Kennedy Meadows, and so I rode down with Margaret with our brakes engaged, and stayed with her as far as the store where she rejoined with Dave.
Brook paced Pete into the headwind and overtook me on some flats well before that, and they did not stop at the Kennedy Meadows market. Ken had driven by and was there, so I asked about Judy and Jeff, and he had not seen them, only the last of his brood, a guy by the name Jack, I believe, who was otherwise DFL. Ken assured me he would check on Jeff and Judy, so I went on ahead. When Ken caught me again, just before the 15 mile descent, he told me that Jeff and Judy were OK and not far behind.
Unbeknownst to me, my phone had died about 2 miles before that, which is what I have been using to record my rides lately. I had not put it on airplane mode (with location services on) or at least have turned off 4G, either of which would have saved plenty of juice for it to have lasted.
Stopped time:
9:32 rest stop 2/3rds up Sherman Pass climb
30:30 at Sherman Pass (1:30 shown as "moving" time)
30:50 lost in Kernville with me taking a wrong turn and stopped at the market (5 min. walking, 20:43 recorded as stopped, or 25:42 total at the market)
11 min at Fairview (topped off with water before the climb; recorded as 1:12 from walking)
Also stopped briefly when I came up on Margaret and Dave for pictures; at Kennedy Meadows to check-in with Ken, before the 15 mile descent to 395, and again on the 395 to check on Teresa, who insisted on riding the access road, evidently an accumulation of more than 10 minutes!
