**Boston to Salem Advanced Level Mounatin Bike Ride:** This is a specialty bike ride designed for mountain bikes ONLY and for riders with endurance experience. This ride is over 40 miles with a lot of resistive dirt trails and paths. The average time to complete this ride can be 5-8 hours. Rated as "Extreme" take this warning seriously. Do not ride alone, some of these trails are sparsely used.

Starting at @point[North Station](d,118.93) in Boston, the route will take you through 7 parks and many towns in Metro Boston on your way to Salem, Mass. Once there, you may use the commuter rail to return to Boston with your bike.

**Riding Equipment:** You will find any weak spots in your bike on this ride! Make sure your equipment is in good shape before starting. Bring (2) sets of Tubes. This is a ride for mountain bikes. There will be a mix of rugged fire roads and real single-track over very @photo[difficult terrain](1889418). I have included a couple of photos to show a typical terrain. @photo[Large](1889420) and @photo[small](1889416) boulders throughout. Tire selection is important. XC would be a mistake. There is no place to stop for food or supplies. Pack 100+ oZ water, and a sandwich.

**About the Ride:** The first 15 miles is mostly flat, dirt bike paths with just a few street crossings along the @poi[Charles River](2303382).  This route will take you past many @poi[ponds](2303396) before a visit to the Mystic Lakes.

Once past the lakes, you will cross through a cemetery and a short road ride to enter into the @poi[Middlesex Fells Reservation](2303383) . This ride will take you through all 4 sections of this huge park.

Once crossing under Rt 93, you will ride to @poi[Spot Pond](1553388). If you want to take a break and a lunch, this is the spot.

The last two sections of the park are next. The @poi[Whip Hill](2303393) area has some nasty trails… if you get on the wrong one, you will know it.

After the downhill blast that gets you out of the park, there is a short road ride of ~3 miles to @poi[Breakheart Reservation](2303392). Big park, most of the trails are too rugged for skinny tire bikes. Nice beach stop at this park if you have a towel with you.

Now in Saugus, you will head over Rt 1 to gain entrance to the back side of @photo[Lynn Woods](1889440). The @poi[Lynn Woods](2303389) is a mountain bike Mecca, and is the nicest park on the North Shore for aesthetics, and athletics. While most of the trails in this park will bend your frame, I have selected a mix of fire roads and real single-track that will get you through this park. Take an extra moment to see the viewpoint at Walden Pond.

The side roads in Lynn will get you to the @poi[Spring Pond](2303391) area, and that will lead you to Downtown Salem. Please check the train schedule as there are “Rush-hour” block outs for bikes during the week. With over 50 venues in downtown Salem, plenty of places for a beer and a burger.
