One day option, 205 miles. This ride was on my bucket list ever since I decided to move to Washington. It is co-sponsored by my employer Group Health. First 100 miles was fairly easy with not much climbing. Starting in Seattle at the University of Washington, the ride passed through Renton and Puyallup and then through Fort Lewis Joint Base. The base is actually quite beautiful. Half way point is in Centralia where most riders stop for the night. The next 100 miles passes through farm land in Chahalis and then most of the climbing begins. Most of the climbing I have done in Washington does not consist of long sustained climbs like in Souther California but rather repetitive relatively short rollers and hills of various lengths and pitches that add up over time. We eventually came to a steeply pitched, very high bridge over the Columbia River near Longview. This is the point at which the ride became more of a slog rather than a scenic tour. The last 40-50 miles was along a very busy highway with loud cars and trucks speeding by. Making matters worse, I developed pain behind my left knee cap which I have never experienced before. I think my seat was a little two low. Managed to soft pedal the last 20 plus miles into Portland.
