N'Emonda. Cloudy, cool - in the 60's the whole ride - humidity in the 90's and pretty windy, 7-10 mph from the NNE with gusts up to 16 mph, but no rain and dry roads. Turnout for the race was fairly low historically so the first half up to High Cliff Park was actually the most difficult part with the smaller group and the head winds. Since Ride Across Wisconsin was this weekend, I suspect it cannibalized the RTL attendance.
I rode with Jack in Wave 6 - 21 mph. It was tough right out of the gates. 2 riders insisted on attacking repeatedly, Our wave was 34 riders and the fast pace and attacks dropped the lead group to 11 riders by mile 6 or 7. It got worse from there and by the time I was dropped at 22 miles, the lead group was only 5-6 riders. After my last pull, the rider in front of me dropped out and I discovered that he had let a 30 foot gap open up and I honestly did not have the strength to sprint back up to the group. So I rode with several people in smaller groups at lower speeds up to the South turn on Hwy 55 at mile 43 and into a tailwind situation. I did ok on the High Cliff climb and flew down the East side of the lake with another rider. By mile 65, we had a 21.2 mph average going.
When we turned East into head/cross winds and mostly uphill, I was gassed and could not keep his wheel so I rode solo from there. I felt like I bonked and seemed to get slower right up to the end. Finished with an official 19.5 mph avg speed (19.4 mph on Wahoo), 292 out of 590 riders and 9th in my age group. Jack had a great ride, finishing 3rd in our age group and he was successful hitting the 21 mph avg speed target.
Still a good effort but I just didn't have the legs this time. In hindsight, I should have ridden in wave 7, From what Wally, Steve and Rob told me, they had a much larger group and it stayed together up to the hill at High Cliff park. I don't think I would have had a problem maintaining a 20 mph avg without all the matches burned early in my group.
