This was start of the 6 days tour across glorious Algonquin wilderness park. It was planned to the smallest details as there is no place for mistake in those woods. I was heavily loaded, 30kg, with all possible necessities. Sleeping, cooking, water purification, all possible weather clothes, food for 6 days, spare tire, 2 tubes and tools.
Everything looked great for first 23km. Great forest service road with mesmerizing nature along the way until I got to the creek crossing with no bridge?! It wouldn't be the first time for me to cross rivers with no bridge but they built trenches on both sides so you couldn't just push your way over. I had to disassemble my setup and carry it over in three trips.
After few km I came to another creek crossing with the same procedure and many fallen trees that I had to disassemble and climb over.
Road gradually started becoming double then single track and at the end moose track. Nature completely took over the road and I couldn't continue any further. I was pushing forward in hope that it will clear up at some point but I was getting deeper and deeper in unforgiving wilderness with so slow progress. I was completely exhausted of all those obstacles jumping that I decided to turn back while I had time.
I had to go through all those obstacles over again. By the late afternoon, I made it back to the good road and found beautiful overnight spot on the shore of Indian pipe lake.
Lesson to be learned from this experience: don't thrust 100% online mapping and know when to give up and turn back. Nature is beautiful but can be dangerous.
It turned out that, if I stayed on the tour as planned, I would be hit by the huge thunderstorms on days 4-5 in the middle of the wilderness. Who knows what could happen.
Glad to be home with great memories and 1 pint of blood less, which mosquitoes and deer flies took. It will take a lot of red wine to recuperate.
Happy trail!
