Meanwhile I suggested we do Big Basin gravel since we were right next to the trailhead and he (and Sonny) refused. I see how it is. Ingrates! ๐
There were so many cyclists out today. Way more than normal.
Pretty uneventful all the way out to the coast other than a squirrel that tried to kill itself by almost running into my front wheels on a bit of a descent.
Once we were on Stage, we encountered a headwind. That's not supposed to happen when you're going south.
At Archangeli, while we were having lunch, I ran into Jon McNeill and he sat down to eat with us. Then a couple minutes later Theresa Lu rolled in. Couldn't believe it. Unfortunately they were both rolling north to Tunitas while we were headed south to Pie Ranch after lunch.
It was a headwind going down Hwy 1. Fortunately it wasn't that strong. It was well worth the detour to Pie Ranch. While we were there Sonny realized we'd be getting home later than expected. The ride back, may or may not have been accelerated. :)
My legs felt a little tight today. Probably a partly from Thursdays ride and partly from not riding enough since the cold. I didn't quite feel as good as I did Thursday either and I was coughing a little more. Not as bad as last weekend though.
On Haskins, I decided to push a little harder. I didn't go all out as we still had W. Alpine to climb. On W. Alpine, I tried going for it. At first it was feeling alright but before getting up to the first T-intersection, my legs were starting to die. I hadn't really gapped Bob and Sonny that much and I thought they'd actually catch back up to me. And at the intersection, Sonny wasn't that far behind.
I continued on to keep the legs moving and really just expected for them to catch up but once I was climbing again, I got a second wind. At the bottom of W. Alpine, this kid passed us on gravel bike going pretty quickly. He must have paid for it because I passed him back early on the second section of W. Alpine. On the last steep bit before the top, that kid came flying by me. I didn't really even think about going after him... okay I thought about it a little... because my legs were already feeling a little they were going to cramp. We also still had a ways to go before getting home.
I waited for the guys at the top and then we had a ripping descent down Page Mill. I definitely think that helped me get my legs back. We even made it back by 6p.
