Ideally we should've done this ride yesterday when it was cooler but Sonny could only ride today when the oven was set to medium.
We started early, both to beat the heat but also so we could get back before sunset. It looked like it should've been cool to mild for at least the first half of the ride until we left SF but it ended up being pretty hot in the city.
Throughout the day we encounter many different microclimates. It was various combinations of cool to hot and dry to humid.
Going up Kings, Bob complained about having no power. Sonny and I thought he meant he was feeling weak, and while that was true, we didn't find out until the end of the ride that he was talking about the fact that he wasn't getting any power data from his power meter. :)
We chose to do this ride CW to get the major climbing out of the way but that meant we were on the wrong side of the road for the coast views which significantly takes away from the beauty of it.
There was also so much traffic along the coast all the way in to SF. Not pleasant at all. First time heading north on 1 from Montara to Devil's Slide and there's place where there's no shoulder. I had no idea. Pretty lame.
Bob took us on a different route north of Pacifica to avoid the Hwy 1 interchange on Skyline. It meant a steep climb. Not sure it was any better.
We had lunch at Chino's Taqueria on Balboa and 35th. We all thought their burritos were pretty good but cash only. Luckily we all had enough. During lunch, I tried to recharge my Garmin. It was at 55% and when we finished lunch it was only recharged to 61%. I've been having problems with the cable and it seems to only charge when the cable is positioned just right. Apparently it wasn't quite right throughout lunch to only get 6% charge.
At around mile 75, I saw that I was down to 51%. Doing that math, we had less than 50% of the ride to go but I felt like I didn't want to take the chance and I just turned on the Battery Saver Mode. I'm so glad I did because I was down to 2% left at the end of the ride with the battery saver on. There's no way I would've made it back otherwise.
After lunch it was always so busy that it was hard to enjoy the ride and I barely took any photos. Had to keep my head on a swivel.
The heat ramped up after lunch and then a little more as we got south of SF. We were all getting cotton mouth and probably not drinking enough. We decided to stop off at Dunkin' Donut for a cold drink. I ended up getting a Blood Orange Refresher. Refreshing it was not and I would highly recommend NOT getting it. I fell for the marketing.
It was tart, not sweet enough, ice tea. It started off luke warm. I had to mix it around to get the ice to cool off the drink but really it was all kinds of wrong.
Most of the rest of the ride back was uneventful. It was just really hot and the guys were tired. Bob was quite salty, literally and figuratively. :P Even I had salt on my jersey which has only happened one other time.
