"Area closed to public access for nesting of prey March 1 thru June 30"
Not recommended for bikes. One section of rock required the loaded bike to be lifted while precariously scrambling up it. Very deep single-track ruts especially starting out where pedals often hit the edges. And there were lots of goathead burrs (common throughout Colorado) that punctured my tires many times. [Note: self-healing tubeless tires worked impressively well, patching at least a half dozen leaks on each tire with negligible pressure loss.] Although I saw no significant weather, the top proved too windy to sleep comfortably. It's also worth noting the rattlesnake I came across (pictured) warming itself on the nearby rocks.
Despite all this, it was an educational adventure that I don't regret. I'm still new to bikepacking and I want time camping in odd settings like this. Even on Labor Day, I didn't encounter a single person along the trail and only spotted one tent camper miles further down the trail at the base of the butte. I prefer camping on National Forest Service land over either of State Park campgrounds I'd previously visited this weekend. I managed some nice moonlit photos and drone footage, albeit with no chance of catching the Aurora Borealis.
If others want to try this or the full trail over the buttes, I recommend riding from the more developed trailhead near the picnic tables and toilets. Aside from climbing the rocks, the grade was easy enough. Just don't pack any gear low enough that the deep single-track ruts will stop you as some on the top are unavoidable. As always, yield to other trail users especially on horseback. And of course, be prepared for expect many holes in your tires. As for myself, I'll be back... but probably just on foot. :)
