This is one of the most scenic and historically interesting bike rides you can do anywhere in 1 day. Starting at the St. Catharines Museum & Welland Canals Centre is a great spot to start.
When I did this ride as a 2 day ride with an overnight stop in Niagara Falls, I started in Port Colborne. I called the city parking and asked about overnight parking and they said it was not a problem. I just have to give them the date and my license plate info.
So when starting from St. Catharines you head north then east to the Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) area where you will find has dozens of wineries, outdoor farm markets and tons of historical places to stop.
The Town of NOTL is beautiful and it is worth your time to stop and walk around as well as ride over to the Queen's Royal Park. For a meal the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club has a great view and reasonable meal prices. Fort George is an interesting tour if you have the time.
The Niagara Parks Commission and the Horticultural School does an amazing job with the grounds throughout the Niagara Parkway area. Beautiful flowers and focal points like the Floral Clock are everywhere along the parkway. Huge and luxurious homes can be found all along the Parkway also.
Niagara Falls is of course the main attraction in the region. The Nikola Tesla monument gives a great vantage point of the falls and is a nice place for a picnic lunch. There are plenty of washroom stops, restaurant options and places to repair a flat tire throughout this route. Almost this entire route is safe paved bikeway!
Some of the areas along the Niagara Parkway between NOTL and Fort Erie do however need some resurfacing. Old Fort Erie at the South Eastern tip of the route is a great place for a meal and a washroom break.
If you want to veer off the Friendship Trail route, Crystal Beach has a cool little shopping district on the corner of Derby Road & Erie Road. Lots of cool restaurants as well in that area. The stretch of trail from Old Fort Erie to Port Colborne is an old rail trail but it is 100% paved. Not as much to see on the Friendship Trail but the cycling infrastructure and signage are excellent.
Once you get to Port Colborne there are plenty of restaurants and sites to see. The Pedal Bicycle Shop on Main St in Port Colborne is a very nice cycle shop and well equipped.
Heading north along the Welland Canal is a little more industrial, but the history of the Welland Canal is worth reading up on. Once you get back to the St. Catharines Museum & Welland Canals Centre there a excellent exhibits and information of the canal system.
The City of Welland has a done a nice job along the canal and the adjacent Welland Recreational Waterway to bring festivals and rowing/ paddling competitions to the area. For more info go to niagaracircleroute.ca and niagaracyclingtourism.com.
P.S. I hope by providing this level of detail with photos and links might help others enjoy this ride. Also, I hope it might inspire others on RideWithGPS.com to be more detailed in their posts about great places to ride. Please include pics, info on washrooms, sites to see etc!
