Seven. Gorgeous Fall day, cool at the start but most of the ride was in the 50's & 60's and plenty of sunshine. Started the ride around 8:30 am and 48 degrees. When I hit the shady area temps dropped to as low as 39 but made it up to the 50's by 9:15. The first 18 miles was predominantly uphill but at very low grades This is where most of the locks are - 22 of them. After about mile 20 it mostly flattens out and there are almost no locks until after Geneseo. I stopped for lunch in Colona then rode the rest of the trail out to where the canal dumps into the Rock River. I rode pretty fast back to Geneseo to stay the night. But first, I stopped at the Geneseo Brewery in downtown and sat outside in the beer garden, which was set up for Geneseo Days. After a couple of refreshing ales, I rode over the the Regency Inn about a mile away. After cleaning up, I walked back into town and had dinner at the same brewery, which had a great menu. A really good day but I was pretty exhausted by the distance - 78 miles felt like riding a road century and took about as long. The canal trail is in decent shape - huge improvement over the I&M Canal and most of the locks and bridges are still in place, so this one lives up to being a State Park, whereas the I&M Canal is more of an 'abandoned' State Park. Trail surface is a broad mixture of old pavement, mostly gravel and some dirt and grass sections. I Saw lots of Blue Herons and some Sandhill cranes, even saw an albino squirrel. Plenty of racoons, squirrels and a lot of turtles sunning on logs and rocks in the canal. The Hennepin Hundred 100 mile ultra marathon was going on - saw plenty of runners but overall very few bikes and of the 10 I did see, 5 were electrics.
