This ride started from Lake McDonald Lodge 10 miles up the Going-to-the-Sun Highway. I did a 10 mile out-and-back for a warm-up. Wanted to start from Apgar Village, near the start of the Highway, but would have had to ride through several miles of construction and a one-lane areas. Decided not to do that. The first six miles from Lake McDonald Lodge to Red Rock Point are fairly flat (about 500 feet climbing), then the real climbing begins. The next 4 miles to the Loop Turn have a consistent 4-6% grade. After the Loop Turn (mile 23.5 for my ride), an 8-mile climb awaits. This climb has a consistent 6% grade. There are several scenic points along the way that break up the grueling climb. Some of these sights include Bird Woman Overlook, the Weeping Wall, Oberlin Turn and finally Logan Pass. Traffic volume was much less this year compared to 2021, even though the weather was better.
