The flattest gravel century you can do in the Bay Area. It's a mix of gravel and paved bike path. Most importantly, not that much time is spent on roads with a lot of traffic. And a bonus, it also has beautiful bay views (when it's not foggy!).
The day started off foggy and stayed that way until the end of Hayward, just before the Oakland Airport.
Going through Coyote Hills, there was an egret right next to the trail. As we approached it, it took off and flew ahead only to land next to the trail again. This happened four or five times before it finally figured out it should fly somewhere else. And the trail is windy, not straight, so it was really failing to get out of the way.
Then on another trail, we passed a black kitten that didn’t look too happy sitting curled next to the trail. I almost turned around to get it, or try to get it. i figured it could’ve hung out in my bar bag.
I ordered the eight piece dim sum from WoKitchen food truck. Normally that’s two meals and I was worried I ordered too much food but I finished it all and surprisingly didn’t feel stuffed.
On the way back, we tried a new trail that hugged the bay with some beautiful views of SF and the Peninsula. The condition of the trail was pretty beat up though and it was better to ride on the dirt.
When we got back into Union City, all of a sudden my back wheel bucked. It felt like I had a big chunk of tar or something stuck to my tire. It also didn’t sound great. I stopped to see I actually got a nail in the tire and I “hammered” it all the way in. The tire didn’t seem to have lost any air and I didn’t hear any come out or see any sealant. I wasn’t really sure what to do. I pulled it out and immediately spun the tire. The nail was bent. Hopefully the rim tape and wheel are okay.
First of all, no air seemed to come out when I pulled the nail and when the tire came back around to the spot, it was sealed. No air or sealant sprayed either and no air seemed to have been lost.
I can’t think of a better outcome and it took no time or effort to fix. The tire was fine the whole rest of the way back and by the next traffic light, we couldn’t even find the spot where the nail had gone in.
Pretty big positive review for tubeless!
The winds were generally calm today with a nice tailwind back. The only really bad section of headwind, which is always bad, was heading out to the levee on Alameda Creek Trail. I've decided from now on, all rides should be done so it's tailwind back.
This seems bad but I only drank three bottles of Skratch plus the can of Coke at lunch for this whole ride. Seems like that’s not enough hydration.
