My parents were gracious enough to drop me off in Macon to make my ride home a bit shorter(and also so we could spend more time together), but of course I managed to wind my way around middle Georgia in search of interesting stuff.
I wound my way along beside the interstate and crossed it several times, and once I left the shopping area at the Zebulon road junction the Macon traffic died and I pedaled some nice gravel and narrow paved roads in Monroe county. Lots of fun rolling hills.
More of the same in Butts county, and a few short gravel sectors. The day was pretty warm and i was burning through water and was looking forward to a store stop around mile 54, but I misremembered and it turned out the store was actually at mile 64. I was doing fairly well on my hydration though so I wasn't all that worried I was running low. Then at the top of a nice hill appeared the Fellowship Presbyterian church, an interesting A frame design, on a hill overlooking the nearby Towaliga river. I decided to try my luck at finding a faucet, and didn't see one right away but there was a separate narrow building apart from the worship area that had bathrooms with doors facing the outside like at a park. Surely, I thought, it would be locked. But indeed the doorknob turned and I found a clean bathroom with climate control and a sink with running water. Score. I filled my bottles and went on my way, and the store wasn't too far down the road at the GA 16 junction with I-75. The first gas station I tried had a line because their card reader was giving them trouble, and after awhile I made it to the front of the line and I had enough cash to cover my snacks thankfully. I leisurely ate my late lunch on a nice little picnic table in front in the shade.
Thus reinvigorated I set off, crossed the interstate and zig zagged back and forth across the highway on some nice quiet roads. I encountered Wani road which I knew had a very likely closed bridge, which turned out to indeed be the case. The bridge showed up on the satellite view clearly so I figured piece of cake. I made my way through the overgrown path leading around the mounds of dirt and concrete barriers the county put down. I peered through the overgrowth to find a person sitting cross legged, head down, looking towards the creek in the middle of the bridge. The bridge was still mostly level but obviously couldn't support a vehicle anymore, and the brush made only a tiny path behind him. Oh well, i'll just make my way forward on the faint path, and eventually he'll notice me and i'll wave or say hi and be on my way. He did have some headphones that covered his ears so I figured it was likely that i'd startle him sitting there. He never made any sort of movement that indicated he saw me at all, and I just rode behind him and didn't say anything. It's entirely possible I snuck by without him noticing me, he was so engrossed in whatever he was listening to.
I made my way through Griffin without issue, and pedaled the familiar roads back home. It was such a lovely day today.
