The North Fork Malheur River Trail is arguably our best trails on the Malheur National Forest for mountainbiking. It is the only trail on the forest which has been graded and improved with mountainbikers specifically in mind.
As the name implies, this trail closely follows the North Fork of the Malheur Scenic River. Developed camping opportunities can be found at the trail’s northernmost trailhead, as well as dispersed sites along the trail’s length. The trail is predominantly composed of mellow, rolling grades and is one of few singletrack opportunities in the area well-suited for singlespeed riders. Segments of this trail can be chunky with rock debris and roots. Occasional, steep trailside embankments, pose high consequence should a rider take an ill-timed spill. This trail is an out-and-back, however, by connecting to the Crane Creek Trail which intersects the North Fork, Malheur River Trail, cyclists can make a loop of the journey.
The Crane Creek portion of this route is along old multi-use two-track and is predominantly a climb. Natural springs can be found along this segment and multiple shallow stream crossings are required.
Crane Crossing will pop out onto NF-1663 road and will soon thereafter intersect with NF-1600. From here its all pavement with mellow climbs and long fast descents until you intersect with NF-1675, the original beat-up gravel road which takes you to the North Fork trailhead.
