Did my monthly randonneur ride today. I wanted to ride this new route on a Sunday due to traffic considerations, and this looked like it might be my only chance this month. The forecast was for 30 - 36F temps and 13 - 18mph westerly winds, but I decided to go ahead with it anyway; I now know not to ride in such conditions. Wind chills were 21 / 31 at the start / finish. I was satisfied to find that I dressed well enough for the temps. However, the wind across those open Salem County fields, e.g. along Newkirk Station Road, was daunting at times. Late in the ride I gave in and dropped an ibuprofen tablet to relieve my achy thighs. Fortunately Rick and Dawn were riding along, so I was not fighting the cold wind alone, which somehow made it bearable. And they were kind enough to wait up ahead for me repeatedly. Thanks, Folks! Saw uncut asparagus fields, and remembered hearing that the imported variety was so cheap this year that local farmers did not bother to harvest theirs. At the Pennsville super-Wawa control near the end, knowing that the wind was now going to be to our advantage, I treated myself to a Payday bar. Sweet!
