I found Bay Area Bike Tag #411 at Bilger Quarry in Oakland. As the game is played, I took a photo of my bike there and rode to a new location for a photo to post of the next tag for others to guess. https://www.reddit.com/r/BAbike/comments/z2t66d/bike_tag_412_towering_figure/
To play you have to guess the location from the photo. Since you've seen my route, you're disqualified from playing this round. (The point of the game is to guess from the photo and get there and to your new tag first.) But there will be more rounds from other players. [edit: the tag has been found. Now making the ride public.]
2 of my other recent attempts to set Bay Area Bike Tags got "sniped" - someone else posted the new tag while I was working on it. It happens. And I know I take that risk when I do long-distance tags, giving the competition more time to act.
So this time, I wasted no time. I caught the last northbound BART train of the evening from Milpitas, and got off at MacArthur station in Oakland. It was 1.3 miles to the tag. I got the photo... at 1AM. That's also a new one for me.
The new "mystery" location is not intended to be difficult this time. After the tag was stuck for over a week in the East Bay Hills, this is to get it moving. Though I moved it back to Santa Clara County, where it hadn't been placed at all yet this year.
The mystery location is the Martin Luther King Jr Library at San Jose State University (SJSU). The title "Towering Figure" refers more to whom the building was named for than the structure itself.
It was a challenging ride through the night. Though it had its interesting moments, such as watching jets take off and land at Oakland Airport during a snack stop. I arrived at SJSU around 7am, minutes after sunrise. That excellent timing was what I hoped to do, but was far from certain to work.
On the way home from SJSU, I had to snap a picture as I rode through Berryessa BART at 7:36am since the ride started at MacArthur BART at 12:55am, and wasn't done for another 2 miles after that.
