Tom and I headed out to the DAR to see how she was doing and how the leaves were holding up up in Williamsburg/Goshen. They have some mighty pretty foliage up that a ways -- leaves of green, gold, brilliant oranges, and stunning reds. Our plan was just to head up the NEMBA trail to the Bear Trail onto the Secret one which wraps around to the Beaver Pond and Bobcat Trails then finally looping back on the Long Trail via Moose Run. But there were a few hiccups, as always along the way.
About halfway up the NEMBA trail, I realized that my geeps was giving some pretty caddywompus readings. Turns out the batteries were putzing out and the data was all garbled. I put in some fresh ones and it was all gravy from there on out, at least for the geeps. As we were about to jump on the Bobcat trail, I spied a geocache on the map not too far away. We tried to find it, but it was hidden too well -- those silly falling and pretty leaves disguising hidden boxes. Silly leaves! Well we ended up turning around empty handed after finding the beaver dam. We did the pretty long climb and crossed the road onto the Long Trail. After we were on Moose Run for a bit, we tried a trail that led through some private property. We were very quiet, because the signs told us to be -- that is until...
Tom broke his chain again. He fixed it up, and we went back up the hill to find a geocache along Moose Run hidden in the ruins of what appeared to be the foundation of an old house. It was about 150' off the trail, but we left his chain link to share with others. Off we were, no problems other than rider issues and that stupid hill that finishes up by the pond. It has an impossible corner and is steep as all get out. It's definitely a good way to finish a leisurely Saturday ride.
Note: Free parking after labour day there!
