Started by checking out whether the loop just up on the hill was feasible for when I just wanted to get out - not actually go anywhere. Conclusion was that the three speed bumps in the route were untenable. Tried shortening it around the islands - not really good either. So, off on my real ride. Looped down Center St / Ten-Ten, then Schifflein (sp?). Almost got back to Ten-Ten, heard a poorly maintained vehicle pacing me just behind, didn't think much of it. Just short of the intersection, it passed me - an old, beat-up truck. As the back bumper came even with me, I saw the turn signal on. Then it turned, directly in my path, into a parking lot short of the intersection. I hammered the brake (only one on my singlespeed) hard enough to raise the back wheel, and hollered a 'HEY! NOT COOL!'... which caused him to stop dead there and just sit. After a couple minutes, he proceeded to park, and we had a few words. His short answer was 'you were on the shoulder' and 'I didn't see you'. Bull... but what can you really say to get through to a large (rotund?) man in a crappy pickup? BTW, I always run a front and rear flashing light - both Blackburn Fleas in this case. Anyway, after that, I went back down ten-ten and took Industrial Drive, then returned via NC-55.
