Yesterday's Ironhead Half Marathon was cancelled due to lightning. Of course, I found this out at 640a when I arrived at Manasota Key Beach after an hour and 45-minute drive. The race director's email went out at 620a but I was still driving. Race was supposed to start at 730a and the RD did a good job at waiting to the last minute to call it as it was a "rain or shine" race. It only sucked for the few of us who had to drive in but this is mostly a local's half, so for many I think it just meant a nice morning at home enjoying the stormy weather and some extra coffee. It rained on me most of the way in and back home, so I wasn't at all surprised the race was called and was kind of relieved because Who the F wants to run 13.1 miles in the rain!!??
My plan was to get home and eat a light early lunch and get out to "virtually" race my half in Sebring after the worst of the storm passed through. But as the day wore on, I realized that my 330a wake up had wore me down and my motivation to do ANYTHING slowly faded.
I did almost literally nothing all day and went to bed at 8p. And woke up at 330a today because I knew I had to take advantage of this weather and whatever run fitness I had so I got out the door around 530-isha.
My intent was to run this as a proper race, minimizing my walking to only when I needed to gel up or pee. I brought six gels with me and consumed five of them: at Miles 3.5; 4.7; 7.71; 10.17; & 11.91. The only nature break was before Mile 2.
Overall, my perception told me I was running at a faster clip than I actually was. Finished in my predicted time and MAYBE, I would have been a tad faster at an actual event with other runners to motivate myself and to chase down.
I'm pleased with my overall performance this morning and while disappointed that the actual Ironhead Half didn't happen, I don't have the monkey on my back of training for an event that is cancelled.
