A treat this morning as breakfast was in my hotel, which had a lovely view over the estuary as it was on the 5th floor.
I also had a lie in as I didn't leave until 9:30 to cycle 4 miles across and up to the top of Setubal where Decathlon is, I was waiting for it to open at 10 and quickly bought a new trye and 3 tubes, I asked if they had a stand pump I could use and the guy said they would fit it ... excellent.
I took the wheel off, and in 5 minutes, it was on at a cost of €4.20 - I also made sure the pressure was up to 95psi.
The first 20 miles of the day were a bit poor, the roads were lumpy and although I was on quiet roads they all has loads of wagons on them - just east of Setubal there are lots on main roads so I think the little roads are used as handy connectors.
I went over the train line and took a picture of a large van storage area so poor was my choice so far.
After 20 miles I hit proper countryside and was suddenly surrounded by Pine forests and Vineyards and cattle - I gad planned to stop for lunch at a cafe called O Pintor but it broke my golden rule as it was 1 mile short of halfway at 32 miles.
I pushed on at great speed and was 12 miles further on near Coruche when I finally stopped for lunch 30 minutes later !
At coruche, there were large Grain silos and a great arched stone water viaduct, which tragically had been severed to build the road I passed it on.
I had now hit another one of those roads which had more wagons than cars and at one stage I saw two wagons passing, as there was virtually no verge I spotted a tiny lay by and jumped off the bike into it, 10 seconds later as they passed the wagons had all of the road both sides !
I hated this road and had to endure it 12 miles, constantly watching ahead and listening behind before I reached Couca where I had 9 miles to do on a very quiet road alond a small valley. After 7 more miles, I reached the Barragem de Montargil, the dam at the bottom of the reservoir in town.
I cycled along the dam before a nasty 300ft climb into town for the night, which has some lovely views over the lake and a great selection of small Portuguese bars and restaurants full of locals shouting at each other Eu Amo Portugal ...I love Portugal 🤣
First day on Tour without a single word of English spoken - let's see if I can make it to Spain em Portugues !
