Based on a sketchy black-and-white photocopied map that we picked up at the Sechelt visitor centre, we tried this gravel trail.
The loop, intended to be ridden counterclockwise, starts with a steep climb up the aptly named Dusty Road, which goes up to an open-pit mine and a landfill. Past the landfill, the road turns into a two-truck-wide service road, with a hard-packed dirt surface with numerous potholes. After an additional mild climb, it transitions into following the elevation contour line.
While the road itself was nothing to admire, it does pass by a few scenic waterfalls, and in some places offers a view of Sechelt, the inlet, and the sea if you peek between the trees.
After Gray Creek, it turns into a steep descent, and unfortunately the hard-packed dirt surface acquires a layer of loose strawberry- to kiwifruit-size gravel, jostling us as we descended. We had to stop three times on the way down to let our brakes cool off. That was some of the most technical gravel I've ridden — probably close to the limit of what is possible with 32mm tires — and I'm super proud of my son for having done it on a less capable bike than mine. And even he, who really dislikes climbing, had to admit that this experience was worthwhile.
The gravel path ends at Sechelt Inlet Road. This section to return to Porpoise Bay Provincial Park has steeper gradients than the gently rolling hills closer to town.
