Since Palomares was closed potentially, we headed out to Hayward Shoreline and got in some gravel. 🥳 I haven't ridden since Death Valley. My legs didn't feel great but they didn't feel too bad either. It was another difficult to dress for day. It was sunny but the temps were going to be mild or just below. There was also supposed to be significant wind and wind chill. Without the wind, the sun was pretty strong and it was almost a little too warm. But when the wind was blowing it was kind of chilly. Stupid Alaskan winds! Although the tailwind home was quite nice. Mostly stupid Alaskan winds. I think the Calaveras descent heading north might be my least favorite descent that we regularly do. I was pushing hard and Bob is still able to coast faster than me. I shouldn't have to work or pedal at all to descend. The strong headwind today really didn't help either. I would've happily just followed Bob but, sorry Bob 😜, his cornering needs work. This leads to some sketchy situations if I take the corners normally behind him both because I'm taking them faster but also my line is different and I kind of don't know when he'll brake. The other choice is I'm just braking and going slowly around the turn and really not enjoying any part of the descent. If I'm ahead, then he's either passing me or having to brake too. All in all, a crap descent! I was joking with Bob going around one corner as I was on the outside, "Don't take me out. Don't take me out." He of course said he wouldn't and I told him I know, I was only joking. What would really happen if he did go wide is that I would just duck in under him and he'd fly off into the embankment (that was there) and explode in a fiery ball of flames on impact as I rode away. 🤣
