Sunday 23rd October 2016. My ride and eight followers: Sandra Gladwin, Alan Potter, John MacMillan, John Hare, Iain MacDonald, Graham Orford, Bob Morgan and Phil Hallewell.
We set off south along quiet roads to Yiewsley. Stopping to regroup off Cherry Lane we are minus Sandra and Alan. The group got separated at a set of lights in West Drayton and they ended up going down Swan rd, I go back to retrieve them. We continue onward through Harmondsorth to our elevenses stop at Datchet Water Sailing Club. From the top floor it's always interesting to watch the goings on at the reservoir. There are no dogs to watch, but there is a man standing on the keel of his boat trying to right it.
With John Hare and Iain leaving us around Horton, we continue through Datchet to Windsor. Crossing the footbridge, we come across Dave Peck coming the other way. Carried along by a stiff following breeze through Eton Wick and Fifield, we reach our lunch stop at Bird Hills golf centre just before 1pm. This must be the cheapest lunch I've had in a long time, a lime and soda plus a sausage sandwich for under a fiver.
Having reaped the benefits of a tail wind on the way here, we have to endure a head wind all the way back. My new bike encourages a somewhat upright posture which doesn't help the streamlining . I can just about maintain a steady 10mph on the flat. Not very impressive. Our return journey takes us through Holyport, Bray and along the Jubilee River. John Mac says "Goodbye" at Upton Court, and the rest of us carry on to Iver golf club for refreshments.
Knowing full well that no-one will want to pick their way through the rubbish that lines the route to Mansion Lane, I decide to back track across the main road and up to Langley Park. Both Phil and Sandra have left us by the time we reach Bellswood Lane. I decide to try Coppins Lane and take a tumble on the loose surface. My companions help me back into the saddle and we continue to the main road and our dispersal point at Cowley. Yet another interesting and eventful ride.
Regards Bernie
