This is a very easy ride, beginning with a ferry ride from Setúbal (https://www.atlanticferries.pt/en/). It´s almost completely flat and paved, so pretty much any type of bike and rider can do it. (Disregard the Total Time statistic because I forgot to turn the ride off on my phone until the next day). Make sure if you´re bringing your bike across that you go the car ferry, not the catamaran ferry. Also, bikes should remain to the side and out of the vehicle aisles (left from Setúbal, right from Troia). The car ferry docks southeast of Troia and there´s an access road to the N253-1 roadway south to Comporta. There is a compacted stone bike path all the way north to Troia, but it only extends a short way south toward Comporta, ending at the southernmost residential development.
N253 is a reasonably wide, paved road that feels very open because it runs between unpopulated, tree-lined sand dunes. On a Monday morning (April 3), the traffic was light but very fast. Keep your eye on your mirror if you´re riding side-by-side, though both lanes were normally available as passing zones. The openness of this route is great, but the scenery is pretty limited except for occasional breaks in the dunes providing views to the Sado River (east) and Atlantic Ocean (west).
As you approach Comporta, after what feels like a surprisingly short ride, you´ll see mud and salt flats. In the hot months this could mean flies and mosquitoes, but at the beginning of April we were not bothered at all.
Comporta is a small, picturesque village that´s home to some nice cafes/bars/restaurants. Note that on Monday mornings your choices will likely be quite limited. We fortunately steered into the Cervejaria Da Comporta, a combination bar/restaurant/cafe (photo attached). It´s owned and run by a couple guys from Cape Verde who are really friendly. I learned a lot about the Cape Verde islands (particularly Sal).
