Well, on November 2nd of 2016 the three "retired" amigos decided to get one last, far north, mid week MTB ride in. Our target was the summit of Hall Mtn which is due east of Sullivan Lake. Our objectives were to enjoy the company, get a good workout in, breath some fresh fall air and especially take in our amazing surroundings! We accomplished all objectives however, fell just a bit short of our target.
The weather forecast for this epic adventure was a minimal chance of rain, a mix of clouds and temperatures supposedly reaching mid 50's. Well, that may have been true somewhere but certainly not where we were! There was a light rain for most of our ride and even though we had prepared quite well for colder conditions, it was a little chilly to say the least. Nevertheless, we "endeavored to persevere". As with most our rides the surrounding beauty and camaraderie kept us in smiles. A very enjoyable day with no mechanicals or falls, (well that is if you don't count Rick checking the snow water content on one occasion).
Our journey began at the North end of Sullivan Lake heading east on Sullivan Creek Road. Approximately 3 miles up we made a right turn onto FS road number 500. The next 7 miles are a steady climb to where the Hall Mtn summit trail begins. You'll notice from the attached photos, (scroll down in the "OVERVIEW" tab), that we began to see signs of snow at just under 5000ft. I began to question whether or not we would actually make the top at 6300ft elevation. It wasn't long before my question was answered. Snow accumulation increased quickly as we continued to ascend. By the time we reached the trailhead the snow was about 2 inches deep. After having a well deserved lunch, I made a run up the trail to see if it were possible to go much further. After proceeding about 200 yards the answer, unfortunately, was no. Snow accumulation quickly increased with even mild elevation gain and by the time I had no more traction the snow was deep enough to support my bike vertically. At that point our only option was to head down. By the time we arrived back at the truck we were a bit wet and cold although the smiles persisted in thinking on and talking about our day! Having a little time left prior to dark we traveled up to Metalline Falls discussing some of the rich history in North Pend Oreille county. About half way home we had thawed out and we wrapped up the day with a wonderful meal at the Onion!
Another fantastic memory maker with great friends! What's better?
