The first ten miles of this route were great! We rode a flowy trail around the Moosalamoo Campground for fun. After that we headed down to Silver Lake to camp for the night.
The next day we headed down the Liecester Hollow trail with our loaded Salsa Mukluks. It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood!
We should have turned around when the trail left the old carriage road and became too rough for us old timers to ride. More and more hikeabike followed, but I had read this description of Chandelier on the VT Forest Service website, “The trail follows a ridge with gentle grades and has views to the east and west and meets the Leicester…” so I figured it would improve. Holy hell, was I wrong! It would have been a great day hike, but it was a brutal hikeabike with endless blowdown’s, and trails too challenging for us to ride much of. I imagine a skilled mountain biker with minimal gear could probably ride it , but it was no bueno for the bikepackers! I always want to ride trails. I fantasize about bikepacking trails rather than routes that follow gravel roads…
It took us 9 hours to travel 14 miles. The majority of that was hikeabike.
