Trek Fuel EX 9.8. Warm - in the 60's, partly sunny with high clouds, moderate NE winds, not much of a factor for most of the ride. CAMBR trail conditions were yellow, which means slick in spots, which was certainly true. Overall pretty good riding conditions but me and the bike got really muddy. You are supposed to ride through the middle of mud holes which can be pretty hairy at times, as my tires aren't really knobby enough for deep mud. I had to put my foot down a couple of times and even came to a full stop once then tipped over. No damage, just got muddy. I saw 9 deer total today, including a tiny yearling.
First time out to Paul Douglas since a cold and messy ride in late February and conditions were pretty good, but I was wishing I had my mud flipper knobbies on the bike. I did the MWFS West section first: One loop of the Green trail, then Purple trail up to middle section on the Red trail and finally finished off the West on the Purple trail through the 'Prickly Prairie'. The Green trail was in great condition, the Red trail had a lot of mud holes and the Purple trail was in good shape overall, but the worst mud hole was after a tight turn in the prairie so I missed the good line and that's the one where I went down. Total one way on the odd days route is 7.7 miles up to the top.
Took the Paved trail over to the new Orange trail that joins up to the East side of the park. Just freshly cut in and opened so lots of mini stumps and branch hangovers. This time of year it would pay to bring some pruning shears and a small landscape saw to cut off leaning saplings. Nice new trail and it looks like they're already cutting in a new one to make this a full loop.
The Orange trail joins up with the existing Blue trail before the midpoint: Riding clockwise, at 1.3 miles: Going counter-clockwise (TTS) it's at 3.9 miles in. They've added in some new log jumps. The entire East side is the newest and it's definitely more challenging with harder climbs and lots of off camber sections. The new section under construction is needed to make this complete as you can only ride it one way with the upper Orange trail being alternating days. So if it's on the odd schedule (MWFS), you can only access it from the North end.
The entire Paul Douglas FP is really well designed and CAMBR has really stepped up on adding new trails. It just needs a lot of riding to help break in the trails. I was not a fan of the alternating days but I've gotten used to in and it does have some advantages. The addition of the next East Orange trail will be huge, now they just need to add in another section to the Purple to allow South bound riding without hitting the paved trail on MWFS.
