After a good breakfast and a few bike adjustments we were off following the Douro East and we were again either riding uphill or down, no flat sections. We were soon at Resende which was the biggest town in the morning and afterwards we veereed off the N222 to follow a parallel road which ran along the river. The weather was now getting hot and the climb back to the N222 after 5 miles was a bit of a slog. We reac hed the main road and then had a descent down towards Peso de Regua where we crossed the Douro on an old rail bridge which was now wooden decked for pedestrians and cyclists - upon crossing the river we found a restaurant and promptly ordered two Tuna salads for lunch. After lunch we crossed the river back to the south side and within a couple of miles we were at a dam with huge sluice gates to allow river traffic to cross - the difference in elevation eas bout 100ft and there was a huge loch to alllow river traffic to pass. We then followed the river for about 15 miles through gorgeous countryside full of vineyards before turning away from the river on a 2000ft climb up to Sao Joao de Pesqueira for the night narrowly beating a huge thunderstorm into town by minutes.
