Since I left early enough I took the usual shortcut up Senoia road to get to Tyrone and Palmetto. But there was a train blocking the crossing at Dogwood trail, so I diverted to the Brooks Dr subdivision cut through. I decided that surely it wasn't blocking the Crestwood road crossing, but of course it was. And it definitely didn't look like it was moving anytime soon. So I went over to 74 to Palmetto road, which was fine because it was early enough.
I had no issues doing a few new roads in Palmetto, and was even able to cut across the tracks to the cemetery from Cobb street. When I came out from the church parking lot to 29, there was a cop parked in a lot a little ways over, and since I jumped a curb plus I came from a place no one should come from, he turned out and went down 154 a little bit, but must have turned around at one of the gas stations because it was clear once I turned onto Carlton road.
Had no issues doing subdivisions in Douglas and Carroll along hwy 166, it was just around sunrise and traffic was low. Rolled in to Haralson county on gravel, and a big highlight of this ride was Candy Kitchen road. The name was cool plus it's gravel which would have been enough to make it great. But in addition it was extremely steep and curvy. So much fun. There was a lot of run down trailers along the way and a few dogs but nothing too out of the ordinary.
Stopped at the CVS and bought a ton of snacks and lots of liquids in Bremen. The next store was going to be only around 50 more miles but in the middle of the day in June with sunny skies, generally it's a good idea to bring more water than you think.
And of course I needed more than I brought. It was definitely hot out and there was a lot more gravel, and very hilly, so this next section was the hardest of the day. I had a lot of fun though because it was also the best roads along the route as well. The ones near the border were fantastic.
Sometime around Roopville before I got to highway 27 I noticed that my crank had major play in it. I had been being annoyed by a tick it was making all ride that changed somewhat. I wiggled my foot around and noticed how loose it was. This was bad news because I have no way to tighten it at all other than my finger. It's a 14mm allen key which is far too huge to carry along. I did have a short section of one that I carried on my bikepacking trip across the usa along with my needle nose vise grip pliers would have allowed me to sort of tighten it. But without even that I was screwed. I hand tightened it and then continued on. Only it would loosen almost immediately. So I began a routine of riding for a half mile or so and then stopping and tightening.
I stopped at the Dollar General to top off fluids and get more snacks in Centralhatchee. I then stopped at a little service road that continued on dirt into a logged forest, to eat some snacks and take a nature break. It was here that I discovered I could use a piece of gravel that was beveled enough to fit in the grooves in the bolt to allow me to tighten it a bit more than with just my hand. This helped a little but not by much. It still loosened right away and so I was having to stop at least every mile.
I actually felt pretty good but this was driving me crazy. In addition I couldn't get out of the saddle to pedal because the crank was barely together. I didn't want to put any more pressure on the parts outside of what I was already subjecting them to. Eventually at long last I arrived in Newnan and had a good ride through the Linc, Summergrove and White Oak, and a safe trip down the wide shoulder of 34 to home.
