Day 2's big challenge was teh long climb to Glen Haven following N Fork of Big Thompson River from mile 80 - 95! It was at the top that I met the volunteer from WI, as he had a Packer and a badger lawn chair sitting out waiting for us. Had a couple breakfast burritos. But dang it, I forgot that this was the place, Glen Haven General Store to get the cinnamon roll! He offered me one to go but I declined as I had to room left to easily carry it.
Across from the store was a B&B that had a purple lilac bush! Ca-ching! My favorite! Of course I walked over to it and had a few big whiffs.
But it all started at 5:20 (the time on RWGPS is off due to time-zones). Mimo and I had tried to coordinate but we didn't so I started on my own and could see a rider in front of me. Turns out it was Kirsten, a strong cyclist I had ridden with on a few CA triple crown rides. Something wasn't right this AM as I rode right by her and on to the first control at Ft Lupton and mile 25. Yep those fast 4-5 were already ahead of me as were a few others. But I could not find Mike nor Steve! I later learned they both were DNF during (for Steve) and after day 1 for Mike! At tthe convenience store in Ft Lupton, they had a 1/2 price table, so found a strawberry Nesquik there. Tasty. Yesterday vanilla Nesquik seemed to work well for me, so that become what I wanted to drink along the ride.
Ride back from Ft Lupton was into a bit of wind and slow for me. Of course another visit to Niwot and Hygiene!
So once the Glen Haven climb and descent ended at mile 110, it was north to Masonville. Seemed like a long time to get there! But after Masonville and a short climb it was back downhill to Sandy's at mile 123.5 and there was the WI volunteer again! This time he created a great turkey bagel and cheese sandwich for me! I ate that with more cheetos!
As I sat there I was not looking forward to "the climb" to Lyons and Apple Valley but the WI volunteer assured me the climb as not bad at all.
Turns out he was correct! Turns out, that was one of the highlights of the day, Apple Valley. Cute bridge at the turn around mile 153.
After that, it was another visit through Hygiene 166 & Niwot, 173 on way home.
