Had zero trouble getting through the area off of Hickory Knoll Ridge, it was completely deserted. Don't think I saw even one house in there, just a lot of miles of super steep gravel and trees. There was a side road that led into the national forest and I couldn't help myself so I went down it and it definitely seemed bikeable if overgrown. I turned around before I got too involved, finished the P loop and got a move on back to Hickory Knoll road.
Next up was the climb up Buckeye branch. I almost decided to skip this one because of how much I didn't think that it would be rideable. But I decided to go ahead anyway.
Climbing up the initial pitch on the logging road shared with the Bartram was steep and I only saw two hikers here. I continued straight on the logging road as the trail turned left onto singletrack. It got more and more abandoned looking the further away I got but always had a beaten down path that was mostly rideable. Lots of deadfall that I had to get off for but nothing too discouraging. I really expected it to be completely blocked by trees or just end altogether. But it was in the same condition all the way until I got very close to the private road that led downhill to Tessentee road that I had planned to bushwhack to. And I didn't even have to resort to that. I continued on the old logging road that followed the national forest property and eventually spit out to a road that led shortly to Stillhouse road. There wasn't a gate or anything which I thought was strange. I climbed up the rest of the road back up to see where it ended, and indeed it did end pretty close to where I rode by. It would have been a tough bushwhack. I bombed down the really steep gravel after adjusting my front brake a bit to compensate for wear. Soon I arrived at a gate blocking travel from down below me, and had no trouble getting around. I did a quick descent and was back down in the valley and into civilization again.
Next I worried that I was a bit too late in the morning to be passing through a private road by some close houses, but as I climbed slowly up the extremely steep Cadon gap road I rolled past several quiet houses without issue. Soon the gravel road turned into abandoned logging road with a couple of big dead trees right at the beginning. The road was way too steep to ride even if it were paved probably. I ended up walking basically the whole way up to Cadon gap. It was very steep but still passable, very similar to the Buckeye branch situation. There were definitely some areas of poison ivy. I tried to avoid it but still touched a little bit. Thankfully this wasn't too widespread and it was mostly open undergrowth.
At long length finally I arrived at the Bartram trail. I had planned to hike a mile west to Jones Gap but decided to just continue straight on the logging road to Hickory Knut gap road and trade a mile of hiking for a few more miles of gravel riding. It was in terrific packed down condition and it was fun but I was really tired. I finally filtered a bottle at a small creek at Lickskillet, and felt a bit better. I was very glad to be done with the climbing after crossing the Bartram again and had a ton of fun riding fast down Turtle Pond road.
