We covered all but 3 miles of the Hall County Great Plains Gravel Route ( GPGR) and rode from Hall County to Kearney. The GPGR is a route from the US border in Texas with Mexico to the Canadian border with North Dakota. The route goes through Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and South Dakota as well Texas and North Dakota.
This portion the route features “one long climb” over the 65 miles we covered. One unmarked MMR that required hike a bike due to irrigation. The area features a few gentle hills, spots of trees and lots of fields of corn, beans and pastures. There’s not much shelter from the sun. Bring your own supplies. Only one fill up spot at Wood River near I - 80 near the route. Hall County was scenic. Once we got into Buffalo County the route became flat and was more of a grind to reach Kearney. The last few miles into Kearney uses a hike and bike trail.
There’s one state recreation area where camping is a possible about 4 miles west from Wood River. Ending our day in Kearney gave us plenty of dining options and if overnighting is part of the plan, lots of hotel options.
If you’re riding through this area, start early to avoid the heat in June, July and August.
