First attempt at RTL greeted us with cloudy, misty, windy (NE 5-10) and cool (60s all day) conditions. Dave M & Jack departed with Wave 6 (21 mph) @ 6:30 AM while Wally, Steve M, Rob and I set off @ 6:40 AM with Wave 7 (20 mph average). Our group of ~60 riders managed a solid, safe double paceline on the western edge of the lake all the way up to Neenah (35 miles) where I had to drop off at the second rest stop. After quickly refueling I started off again but there were no succeeding large groups to latch onto. Rode pretty much solo for the balance, with short stops in High Cliff State Park, Lake Shore Drive and Marytown. Roads for the most part in good shape but some of the town boulevards had potholes and seams you had to watch out for. The climb up to High Cliff was tough but short, while the 6-mile eastbound stretch on HHH, with strengthening NE winds and 3-4% grades, was draining. One of the best features of this ride is that every intersection, traffic light and roundabout had police/traffic control there to allow the riders to continue without stopping. Made my last quick break at Stenz and then took advantage for the downhill back to the start. Moving average for me was 17.4 mph, slower than all the others but I'll take it (no competing with Wally who rode the entire race without stopping!). Good post ride meal and beverages topped off a very well-run ride. I plan to do this again as I now understand the course better and could potentially shorten the ride time.
